Section 1: Assessment Methods & Backwards Design Fit for Online Learning

But if a lesson doesn’t do any of these things, if it’s disguised as learning but is doing little more than keeping students busy, it’s time for it to go. At this stage it is important to consider a wide range of assessment methods in order to ensure that students are being assess over the goals the instructor wants students to attain. Sometimes, the assessments do not match the learning goals, and it becomes a frustrating experience for students and instructors.

Stage Two – Determine Acceptable Evidence:

By way of example, consider a paralegal instructor who wants students, as a result of her instruction, to be able to prepare case briefs. She could begin a class by sharing a summary of cases she finds fascinating and then spend time discussing the cases with students. However, this might not be the preferred use of instructional time when the goal is helping students understand how to produce a case brief and why being able to do so matters.

Stage 3: Learning Plan

When we need to change our assessment and/or learning activities, it may feel daunting. And in the face of a new teaching environment (e.g., online), it becomes clear just how crucial it is that we create authentic, pedagogically sound assessments. If it turns out that those favorite lessons don’t really align with any standards, you might be able to revise them so they do. Or you might keep them for other reasons—not every minute of class time has to be spent on standards-based instruction. Some activities have value because they help us get to know each other better, they help students develop social-emotional skills, or they simply offer a bit of fun.

Curriculum design, and instructional design

As the quote below highlights, teaching is not just about engaging students in content. It is also about ensuring students have the resources necessary to understand. Student learning and understanding can be gauged more accurately through a backward design approach since it leverages what students will need to know and understand during the design process in order to progress. The incorporation of backward design also lends itself to transparent and explicit instruction. If the teacher has explicitly defined the learning goals of the course, then they have a better idea of what they want the students to get out of learning activities.

A unit or sequence of lessons anchored in credible and vital evidence of the desired understandings. Research-based repertoire of learning and teaching strategies. Identifying the desired results for students by establishing the overall goal/s of the learning sequence/unit using syllabus standards. Focuses on identifying what students will understand, will know and be will be able to do.

In just a few years, this and similar experiences grew into Cliff’s design firm “Matt Blacke, Inc.,” and led him to take on projects for the likes of James Franco, Ryan Murphy, and Balthazar Getty. Cliff is known for his beautifully curated spaces that feature vintage treasures, subtle architectural details, and collected pieces of fine art. His designs are both interesting and sophisticated, and they keep Ellen DeGeneres coming back for more (according to an interview with Departures, they’ve done 20 homes together). Additionally, Cliff has worked on commercial spaces including the former Ink Restaurant and Twelfth Street shop. He also co-owns Galerie Half, a purveyor of stunning 20th century furnishings and artifacts. The accomplished artist, architect, and interior designer, Rodrigo Vargas founded RVD in 2009.

For now, though, I’m just going to share the most basic version of backward design. Founded by Amber Lewis, Amber Interiors is known for their laid back, Cali-casual style that artfully layers bold, colorful textiles with neutral, bright spaces. Amber Interiors is a unique addition to this list because of the firm’s adept uptake of Instagram and Pinterest platforms to share their creations. If you frequent the design blogosphere, chances are you’ve come across her light, airy homes filled with bright pops of colors, often in the form of funky pillows. In addition to managing her well-trafficked social media platforms, Amber runs her design firm and ‘Shoppe’ in old town Calabasas. Amber Interiors is also unique in their design offerings- the firm utilizes digital resources to sell e-decor packages online in addition to full-service, in-person designs.

The teacher has created an authentic task in which students will design a 3-day meal plan for a camp that uses food pyramid guidelines. Assessment needs to align with your curriculum (course content) and instruction (teaching methods). Scroll your mouse over the question marks in the diagram to learn more. Learning outcomes describe what students know or can do, not what the instructor does.

Remember that “students” is the subject of the generic learning outcome stem shown at the beginning of this section. The goals for your course should not be stated in terms of what the instructor will cover, but rather in how the students will change, facilitated by the instructor’s guidance. They can range from facts to skills, and can often be seen as the ‘school curriculum objectives’.

I mean, even though I loved the book, my students’ response to it was mostly lukewarm. Maybe it was the connections I was able to make to the stuff students dealt with on a day-to-day basis. I taught that book a few times, and even though I looked forward to it every time, I always finished the unit a little unsatisfied.
